People In Music History
Rameau, Jean Philippe (1683-1764) French composer, also organist,
harpsichordist, and writer of an important Treatise on Harmony and other
theoretical works. At 50, began his succession of more than 20 operas and opera
-ballets, including The Courtly Indies (Les Indes galantes) and Castor and
Pollux. His champions and those of Pergolesi clashed in the so-called War of
the Buffoons (Fr. Guerre des bouffons). Other works include chamber music;
dance music and other pieces for harpsichord; cantatas and church music.
